The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of the oldest departments in the University of Oulu. It was founded together with the University of Oulu in 1959. The department has been in its present form since 1994 when the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics were merged.

In the Department of Mathematical Sciences, students can graduate in

• mathematics (in Finnish)
• applied mathematics (in Finnish) and
• statistics (in Finnish)

as their main subject.

High quality research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences is carried out in a number of research groups.
